Fluorescence systems cost 2–4× more than a good phase-contrast inverted microscope. If your daily workflow is just checking cell confluence and morphology, an entry-level inverted system will save £10,000+ and sit comfortably inside a tissue culture hood.
The quoted price is rarely the final price. Objectives, light cubes, onstage incubators, software licences, service contracts and annual calibration all add up. Before you sign, ask for a 5-year running-cost estimate.

Some microscopes lock images into proprietary formats. If you plan to use CellProfiler, ImageJ, μSAM or AI analysis pipelines later, confirm the system exports TIFF/OME-TIFF with metadata.
A showroom demo with perfect slides proves nothing. Insist on a demo with your cells, your plates and your workflow. This single step catches focus drift, software lag and incompatible consumables before purchase.
